Description

Soundscape / Klanglandschaft

The English term soundscape (soundscape) is a made-up word, composed of the terms sound (noise) and landscape (landscape). Soundscapes describe acoustic envelopes that surround people in a specific location, e.g. B. the individual soundscapes of biotopes or cities. Soundscapes are used in music, radio art, and sound art. In Musique concrète in particular, sounds from nature, technology and the environment are recorded with the microphone and used either unprocessed, slightly processed or electronically alienated. A soundscape is understood to mean the interplay of all acoustic phenomena that are produced in and through a room, such as natural noises, language, work and machine noise as well as music. Soundscapes range from sound art, music or sound design in shopping centers, airports or offices to soundscapes of cities, villages or landscapes. It can be the smallest nuances that give a sound image a specific characteristic and thus make it unique.

The term "soundscape" was used for the first time by the Canadian composer and sound researcher R. Murray Schafer.

The course

The participants of the course sensitize their listening habits by filtering out singular sound sources from the "ambient noise" or the "acoustic atmosphere" of a room or site, exploring them more closely and recording these sound events with mobile audio recorders (ZOOM H5).

The task for the seminar Soundscape is the development of a "soundtrack" of 90 seconds to a maximum of 180 seconds in length including sound recordings, so-called "field recordings" of natural sites, industrial locations, abandoned locations that have fallen out of time, or completely special personal places in your presence or your childhood. The result should be a short film that is able to capture the “magic of a place” acoustically and cinematically.

In a post-production process, the audio tracks are mixed and artistically blended (edited) with edited video recordings of the sound location to form a video film.

If you have no previous knowledge of the Adobe Premiere, Adobe Audition or other editing or audio programs, you can go into more detail about the Adobe Premiere or Adobe Audition programs in personal ZOOM meetings and offer technical assistance.

The workshop

Part of this course with a workshop character is the examination of the design options in the area of audio editing and sound mixing. In addition to portable audio recorders, there is also the possibility to try out different microphones (classic stereo or directional microphones as well as contact microphones or a hydrophone). This recording equipment can be loaned by appointment.

CAUTION!

If a physical meeting in the video studio is not possible due to numerous registrations for the preliminary meeting and the Covid situation, the preliminary meeting for the workshop will be held as a ZOOM meeting. The meeting number will be announced by email a few days before the first preliminary meeting!

Examination Modalities

The prerequisite for a certificate is the submission of an independently developed video or audio project at the end of the semester.

Comments

After a mandatory participation in the preliminary discussion for the course, the first conceptual discussions take place after about 2 weeks in a personal, one-hour meeting. Before the final submission of the video / audio project, the work steps are discussed and assessed in further personal meetings. These meetings can be arranged individually with the course instructor every Thursday between 10:00 and 12:00 and 13:00 and 15:00.

In order to develop an artistically interesting overall project, a visual level must also be designed and co-designed in addition to the acoustic level.

The submission of the film is still set at the end of the semester.
