Introduction to Media Studies. Methods and Methodologies

Kristina Pia Hofer
Fine Arts and Media Art, Media Theory
2021W, Proseminar (PS), 3.0 ECTS, 2.0 semester hours, course number S03463

Description

This course is a ‘Proseminar,’ literally a class that will prepare you for the academic Seminars (i.e., classes that require a 15-20 page academic term paper) offered at Angewandte, with a focus on methods and methodologies used in Media Studies. Which tools can help to think and write about media for an audience of academic peers? What is a suitable topic for a Media Studies paper? What methods of research can you employ, and how do they relate to the theories that interest you in connection to your topic? What is a research question, and how do you build one? What is an argument, and how can you communicate it in your writing? How can you find and process literature, how can you organize your references? The course will be part inputs by me, part workshops that will give you the opportunity to put your skills to practice, and to discuss them with your peers.

Examination Modalities

Attendance is mandatory. I’ll ask you to complete a number of short written assignments over the course of the term, which you will bring to class to get feedback on.

Grades will be calculated according to: participation in class (especially in workshops/group discussions), your portfolio (=collection of all written assignments, to be handed in by the end of the term), and a reflective oral or written exam in January 2022.
