Art of Digital Reality

2021W, scientific seminar (SEW), 4.0 ECTS, 2.0 semester hours, course number S03453

Description

A new version of reality. Upgraded and improved. More shiny, wondrous, potentially flawless. Wouldn’t that be nice? Well, in fact, it’s already here, or in the process of taking shape – deeply embedding as well as permeating us, impregnating our inner- and outermost longings and practices. “Digital reality”, as this new context might be called, has long been in the making, constantly changing its outline, variability and extension – and it is far from ever being finished, or becoming a “hard fact” to be looked upon by an external observer.

How are current art practices related to this new kind of reality? Can art meaningfully engage with the inner workings (and the continuous expansion) of this new all-encompassing condition of digitality? Is art confined to being a mere extension, or a simple mirroring, of what algorithmic invention might have in store for us? Or is art production possibly the most suitable playground for testing, falsifying and maybe undermining the claims and pretensions of the new digital regime?

The seminar will tackle these tricky questions by examining some of the following outstanding features of digital reality: (1) the dialectic of networking and atomization, and related to that, tendencies of “commoning” and privatization; (2) the projections of total control vs. unlimited freedom, with regard to changing sociality and political practice; (3) new models of accumulation against socially oriented feedback infrastructure; (4) the epistemic groundwork of endless computability vs. residues of the incalculable/erratic; (5) unbound iteration (“more of the same”) vs. radical disruption (“move fast and break things”); (6) the idea of new, emerging “materialities”, as opposed to increasing dematerialization and volatilization; (7) prospects of a digital humanism in contrast to a critical posthumanism; (8) environmental oblivion vs. digital ecology; and finally (9) the runaway evolution of the Anthropocene vs. the emerging contours of radically otherworldly “Novacene”.

Overall, the seminar will try to assess the prospects of a progressive redemption in and through digital reality, as opposed to the lurking dangers of an overall electronic apocalypse. Heaven’s gate or road to nowhere? Let’s find out with fresh and collaboratively developed critical tools – new and improved!
