the course is intended to be a an advanced basic introduction to typography. the winter semester will focus on micro typography and type-design. there will be lectures and presentations along several exercises throughout the semester.

the lectures will cover:

– terminology and anatomy of lettershapes
– analog and digital tools to build lettershapes and typefaces
– the history of typefaces and their formal development
– theory of the stroke (broad nib and pointed pen) 
– the character set and micro typography
– the act of reading
