Mandatorily linked to the subject-based internship (FASP) at the school and supervision for students of the Angewandte.

ARTISTIC RESEARCH in the classroom and in art and music settings: Memory-Forgetfulness-Dementia

In this seminar, which is compulsory alongside the school internship (prerequisite: LV: Introduction to subject-related didactics), we will work with methods of artistic research, Phenomena Based Learning, socially oriented design and socially engaged art on the topic of dementia.

BACKGROUND:

Pupils are increasingly touched by the topic of dementia due to their grandparents being affected by it, but they - as well as large parts of society - are not (yet) able to deal with it. 125 million people worldwide have dementia, including 10 million in Europe. Every 3 seconds, the number of people affected increases and by 2050, cases will have doubled. Personal and societal challenges are the result. Together with art, music, dance & design educators, artists, teachers, multimedia art therapists, authors, designers, performers, we are now developing the first art-based teaching concept to sensitize young people to dementia as a learning content in school and to find creative approaches in particular.

According to a European study, ageism is more common than sexism and racism. Freiburg researcher Christian Maggiori: 28 percent of the people surveyed in the study said they had experienced age discrimination in the previous year. Sexism was mentioned by 22 percent and racism by 12 percent, as Maggiori explained in a published interview with the newspaper "La Liberté".

This semester this course takes place in cooperation with the department "Music in Dialogue" of the Institute for Music Pedagogical Research, Music Didactics and Elementary Music Making (IMP) at the mdw - University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna https://www.mdw.ac.at/imp/musik-im-dialog/.

This course is embedded in the project DEMEDARTS, funded as A-609 PEEK project by the Austrian Science Fund (FWF). DEMEDARTS addresses the questions of how art and design strategies can help students in elementary and secondary schools to develop more empathy towards people with dementia and how artistic research can impact intergenerational well-being of people with dementia, the project meets this question with a holistic and transdisciplinary approach. As part of the seminar, we will work with students* but also, if possible (Covid-19), with people with dementia in nursing homes.

The subject-related internship is to be thematically aligned with the course. (PS: By the way, this saves you from having to do a theoretical accompanying paper, which has to be handed in for all other teaching subjects!)

Examination Modalities

>Please discuss this topic with your mentors at the schools right at the beginning! They will have to develop their teaching units together with students from the University of Music on this topic!

Continuous attendance, active participation, reflection on the own teaching concept and the implementation during the courses, as well as the cooperation in the team, willingness to cooperate !

Absences (max. 3 with certificate)

Presentation of interdisciplinary artistic interactions and mediation concepts.

Submission of a written didactic seminar paper of 15,000 characters without spaces, as well as worksheets for teaching and literature in the appendix.

This course may be taken as a compensation/elective 'from subject didactics'/or as a focus choice general/co-requisite, but may also constitute a part of the MA internship, if applicable.
