Description

YOU KNOW THE SCENARIO. It starts with someone claiming that global warming really exists. "Oh yeah?" asks his sceptical friend. "Why don't you show me what global warming is all about, where is it exactly?" The other points first to a graph, then to a spate of bushfires, then looks for another piece of incoherent evidence. In the end, the sceptic got the long end of the stick with his example of the delicious irony of climate scientists stuck on a ship frozen in Antarctic ice.

HYPEROBJECTS, of which global warming is his prime example, are huge objects. You can't pick them up as easily as you can pick up an orange. They are beyond human imagination, but we notice their local manifestations all the time. They challenge our assumptions about human mastery of things; we can, it seems, philosophise more easily about the existence of ordinary things like oranges, but hyperobjects are frightening game-changers, and they have an air of the sublime. Like Bob Dylan's Mr Jones, we sense that something is happening, but we don't know what it is.

This semester, we are going to address the question of the significance of hyperobjects for contemporary artistic practices and will do so in close dialogue with selected propositions of the philosophical current of Speculative Realism, which aims at reconnecting to traditions of classical ontology and metaphysical realism with the assertion that there is nothing that exists to which there is not also subjective access.
