Description
The Making and Shaping of Design: From 1950 to the Present
This lecture gives an introduction to some of the key epochs and movements of design history from the post-war period till today. Offering a wide range of insights into the work and the design processes of designers and design collectives such as Charles and Ray Eames, Dieter Rams, Ettore Sottsass, and Droog Design, and movements such as Radical Design, Critical Design, and Open Design, this course examines the social and political contexts in which the ideas behind these representative works emerged, as well as their relevance to the design world today. By showing how the understanding of modernist design has been constantly challenged, modified, and advanced, design is demonstrated as a multi-faceted discipline encompassing utopia and consumerism, political engagement and neoliberal practice, personality cult and collective wisdom.
The lecture will focus on the following five topics:
- Humanizing Modernist Design: Charles and Ray Eames, Scandinavian Modern, and Post-War Design
- Postmodernism and Utopia: Radical Design, Anti-Design, Memphis
- Design as Message: Droog Design, Critical Design, and Collectible Design
- Star Designers and the Neoliberal Economy
- Design in the Digital Age
This course will be presented in German.
