Description

Design Culture between Icons and the Mundane

The majority of mainstream design history lays its focus on iconic design objects and stories about great designers as ingenious individuals. The human world, however, is more often than not filled with anonymous and mundane objects that equally produce meanings and constitute our material culture. This course locates design within the apparent dichotomy between high culture and mass consumption, creativity and copy, and between first-world original design and third-world manufacturing. Drawing on examples such as chairs as status symbols and the inconspicuous monobloc, the brand design of consumer electronics and the products of shanzhai – the Chinese copycat culture, this seminar examines and questions key concepts related to design such as originality, creativity, and authorship, and encourages the students to reflect on the above-mentioned bandwidth of design with their own observation and case studies.

This course will be conducted in English.
