Love, Truth and Politics

Description

The three big ideas named in the title of this class suggest an almost comically over ambitious semester. In a single course, it would be impossible to take up any one of these concepts adequately and even more impossible to address all three! So, I will offer the following alternative title for the course: How should one live? Not that this question is any less ambitious, but it puts into context the relation of these three big concepts, Love, Truth, and Politics. Each of these marks a response to this question. The question “how should one live?” is posed in the formulation of “the good life” as it was contemplated by Plato in 5th Century BCE, Athens.

Throughout the course of this semester, we will read two of Plato’s most important texts, indeed two of the foundational texts for the History of Western Philosophy:

1)The Symposium, a text about truth, love and desire, what the Greeks named Eros.

2)The Republic, a text about the relations of Truth, Power, and Politics.

The common denominator of these two texts, then, is none other than Truth itself. Truth is that which links these inquiries into Love and Desire, Power and Politics.

The method of the course will focus on dialogue in class and on close textual analysis and exegesis. In other words, as we read these classic works from the history of philosophy we will also be investigating what it means to read. The aim of the course is to familiarize students with modes of close reading and to establish fluency with philosophical discourse and debate.

Examination Modalities

Students will give one short (5-10 minute) presentation during the course of the semester. The aim of the presentation is to present and explain one problem or question as it is raised in the text and to prompt a class discussion.

For the final exam, students will have the option of either writing a short (5 page) essay on a topic of his or her choosing or taking an oral exam at the end of the semester.
