Institute of Studies in Art and Art Education, Art History
2021S, Vorlesungen (VO), 2.0 ECTS, 2.0 semester hours, course number S03646

Description

This course offers an introduction to early modern European art and visual culture, also to the ways of writing its history – from ars nova to the transformations of art and its social framing in the late 18th century. The focus is on concepts of the image and its predominance in this period of the history of the arts, on the dispositive of representation – and its shadows. We will deal with the relationship between the arts, between art work and reality, with perspective constructions, new concepts of religious images and questions of genre, not least with the complicity of artists in the context of colonization, the changing status of art and artists, and the establishment of academies and institutionalized forms of presentation. Although designed as an introduction, we will take a closer look at some specific artistic strategies.
