2021S, scientific seminar (SEW), 4.0 ECTS, 2.0 semester hours, course number S03453

Description

The progress of digitization is becoming an ever more pervasive force, intruding in and radically reorganizing various social fields. New algorithmic regimes, omnipresent data collecting and exploiting as well as the increasing powers of machine intelligence have contributed to the creation of a new “network reality,” or more precisely: an interlocked assemblage of “networked realities” that human and digital subjects alike can hardly evade. The realms of cultural and artistic production do not remain untouched by these ongoing developments. Forgoing any quick diagnosis, one has to ask if there isn’t a profound subversion underway – concerning both the ways in which art is embedded in its surrounding social and political realities, as well as the way in which art itself is materially, informationally and epistemologically grounded.

The seminar tries to address the most salient aspects concerning this potential subversion. Center stage here are the ways in which today’s art production is immersed in, and is itself – actively and reflexively – operating within, this entangled web of digital realities. Guiding questions are: (1) How can art grasp and come to terms with the “disruptive” qualities of digitization happening on various levels? (2) In what ways are the new networked realities susceptible to critical or critical-artistic reflection? (3) How can artistic procedures contribute to a better “mastering” of digital realities, which tend to become ever more totalitarian (and dictatorial)? (4) Is it possible to generate an active and critical understanding of art as part of (and not so much a distant opposite of) these new realities? (5) Can art create its own – sustainable and globally friendly – realities pointing towards a “digital ecology”?
