Sound and Vision (2)
Gabriele Jutz
Fine Arts and Media Art, Media Theory
2021S, Lecture and Discussion (VD), 3.0 ECTS, 3.0 semester hours, course number S03401
Description
This semester we will deal with image/sound relationships in experimental film and other image/sound practices anchored in artistic contexts. The main focuses are: anti-naturalistic sound; “sound of technology,” noise; past and present history of synthetic sound; live generated images and sounds (e.g., in contemporary projection performances).
Sound has long been grossly neglected by media studies and is clearly underrepresented as a young and increasingly relevant field of research in German-speaking countries. This deficit is countered by the lecture series “Sound and Vision” (Parts 1 and 2). While sound in conventional audiovisual products can be reduced to the triad of language, music and noise, a broader understanding of sound is required when considering artistic practices. Silence, noise and, last but not least, audio tones caused by the equipment itself must also be taken into account.
Examination Modalities
A written “Fragenkatalog” at the end of the semester. A Reader and other working materials (video clips) are made available online.
First deadline for submitting the “Fragenkatalog” via e-mail: July 19; final deadline: November 22, 2021.
