Art and the Moving Image (2)

Gabriele Jutz
Fine Arts and Media Art, Media Theory
2021S, scientific seminar (SEW), 4.0 ECTS, 2.0 semester hours, course number S03399

Description

During this semester we will deal with photograhy’s and cinematography’s roots in the 19th century; another focus will be on the film avant-garde of the 1920s, in particular Dada-films and their performative practice. Within these contexts, a central concern will be to discuss the relevance of media history to current media art practices by confronting contemporary artistic works with the historical.

“Moving image-based art” is a dynamic and expanding field. The seminar “Art and the Moving Image” will provide an overview of the history and theory of moving images within the context of art. Examples include experimental film and the overlapping category of “artists' moving image”; experimental animation; hybrid forms that combine the moving image with painting, photography, performance or sculpture; “expanded cinema” that goes beyond the classic cinematic dispositif or apparatus; and a more recent development that takes account of the migration of moving images from the cinema to the gallery or museum. At the same time, we will reflect on gender and media.

Examination Modalities

Language of instruction: German; Discussions in English are possible and encouraged.Requirements: Regular attendance (only three hours’ absence—with proper excuse— is accepted); written seminar paper of 20,000 characters (including spaces and footnotes, but excluding appendices such as references or figures). To anyone who is insufficiently familiar with the writing of academic papers (but also to those who want to improve their academic writing), I recommend watching the workshop "Writing Lesson: Writing and Fighting: Revising and Argumentation for Academic Writing" by Jason Coe (University of Hong Kong): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5CVVKLcrm_g

Attending an “Introduction to Library Research” is also recommended. Webinars: https://www.dieangewandte.at/universitaetsbibliothek?bs-tab-active=5

Comments

An additional note for anyone planning a Bachelor, Master or Doctoral degree:

The Austrian Film Museum makes selected collections available for university research. The aim of this cooperation between the University of Applied Arts and the Film Museum is to process unexplored collections and to carry out substantial research. In addition to films, the collection includes photos, posters, written materials as well as film and cinema equipment.
