Description

The Morality and Ideology of Things
The world that we live in is to a large extent the product of deliberate planning and construction. The environment and artefacts that surround us are not neutral, but strongly condition our actions, experiences and sense of personal and collective possibilities. This lecture series explores the relationship between the design of artefacts and the quality of social and political life. It investigates the ways in which political and moral ideas are represented and embodied in artefacts and how these are guide our actions and structure our everyday life. The inquiry is interdisciplinary, drawing on approaches from social science, philosophy, engineering, industrial design, architecture, urban planning, and information systems. In this lecture series we explore the nature of things and political realm from the perspective of things – or rather politics as things – which Bruno Latour has called “Dingpolitik.”

Learning Objective
The course provides a comprehensive conceptual foundation, which allows to critically analyze and decipher the values and ideas contained in the designed environment. This should stimulate reflection on the cultural, ideological and moral dimensions of one's own design activity.

Registration
The registration for the course is done in two steps: (1) Registration for the course online via BASE (http://base.uni-ak.ac.at). (2) The course uses the digital learning environment Canvas. The access data are stored in the ownCloud folder belonging to the course. A corresponding registration is required. Please follow detailed instructions.

Examination Modalities

The evaluation criteria for the course are: (1) regular attendance of the lectures (min. 80% of the lectures), (2) short written reflection of the respective lecture (min. 80% of the lectures).

In a short written reflection (about 200 words) the respective lecture should be reflected. The texts should contain (a) discussion of the presented ideas, films and texts, (b) new insights gained, (c) critical questions, remarks or statements. The texts can be written in German or English. Submission of the texts until one week after the respective lecture according to specifications.

Comments
