Description

Design as Politics
Design is mainly understood as an activity of producing more or less useful artefacts but not necessarily as a political activity. The design of an artefact, however, is also always a political decision about how people should live, communicate or behave. Design, however, can also be used as a political instrument in the form of activism or as a form of “thingpolitics” discussing and dreaming about possible or better futures through artefacts. Furthermore, politics itself can be understood as a design activity in the sense of planning, making decisions or passing a law. This course therefore examines the political dimension of design as well as the material and visual dimension of politics together with invited guests.

Learning Objective
The course encourages a critical examination of the relationship between design and politics and its influence on the quality of social life. This is intended to trigger a reflection on the political framework conditions of one's own design activity as well as its political effects.
