Description

»THE RECONCILIATION OF THEATER AND FILM«

In the course we deal with the artist and filmmaker Hans Jürgen Syberberg, especially with his late work, the two film installations »Die Nacht«(1985) and »Ein Traum, was sonst?« (1994).

Die Nacht (1985)

»Die Nacht« is a dramatic monologue of six hours which, although originally conceived as a film, was only produced as a film after being shown in the theater. For six hours, Edith Clever embodies poems, prose texts, letters, speeches and dramatic parts that conjure up mourning and farewell, downfall and nearness to death.

Ein Traum, was sonst? (1994)

The title »Ein Traum, was sonst?« Quotes the well-known saying by Kottwitz ’at the end of Kleist's drama Prinz Friedrich von Homburg. The film was made four years after the stage version.

A woman on stage, Edith Clever - no text for an hour, just sounds and music to the projected images. Goebbels speech in Görlitz, radio noises, sirens and detonating bombs merge with the fades of destroyed cities and the album pictures from Nossendorf near Pomerania, the estate of his parents, which he had to leave as a boy shortly after the war.

French critics celebrated his films as a »reconciliation of theater and film«. In the tradition of Wagner's "Gesamtkunstwerk", Syberberg creates cross-border works of art by synthesizing different genres.

As part of the course, you will now create your own film installation work.

Due to current events, the time and place of the course can still change. More information will follow.
