This lecture will present artworks from the 1950s to the present, setting off with a discussion of which criteria are useful to characterize "contemporary art" and how this periodization resonates with globalization. Artworks will be discussed along the following aspects relevant today: materiality, conceptualism, intermediality, transculturality and globalization, artist and their audiences, body politics, art and ecology, social and ethical turns in art and art criticism. The lecture will be held online.

There will be a written exam at the end of the term, which can be taken optionally in German or English. There will be two more exam dates in October and November 2021.

Registration to the lecture is mandatry. It will facilitate access to lecture materials (texts, images, films etc).

The lecture will be held in German (with an English lecture following in spring 2022).  Regular attendance is advised.

It is accompanied by a tutorial course led by Elisabeth Petutschnig (sissi.petutschnig@hufak.net). She will also organize sessions to discuss specific topics, artworks and/or texts. The image scripts shown in the lecture will be uploaded weekly in the OwnCloud folder together with useful texts for each chapter. As you register for the lecture in Base Angewandte, access to the OwnCloud folder will be activated automatically. All images can be viewed with additional information and downloaded on the image database IMAGE (access within Base Angewandte, see tab above).
