2020W, Vorlesung und Übungen (VU), 4.0 ECTS, 2.0 SemStd., LV-Nr. S03644

Beschreibung

This seminar examines the birth of decolonial cinema (from the 50's to the 70's), and the strategies of self-representations in moving images of newly independent nations as well as within their diasporas.

As such and from its premises, decolonial cinema investigated a crucial question: "As formerly colonized nations, how do we produce decolonized representations of ourselves?"

The seminar will focus on the history of decolonized images, practices, and theories produced by the ones concerned in the first place. This examination will be based on case studies originating from the seminal films and writings of pioneers of decolonialcinema, such as Ousmane Sembène (Senegal), Glauber Rocha (Brazil), Mohamed Lakhdar Amina (Algeria), Eldridge Cleaver (USA-Algeria-Congo), among others.

Eventually, the seminar's aim is to investigate the potential for egalitarian representations as a new transnational social contract
