2020W, scientific seminar (SEW), 4.0 ECTS, 2.0 semester hours, course number S03587

Description

In this course we will examine the role of tragedy within psychoanalytic theory. The Oedipus complex is one of the most notorious concepts of Freud’s corpus but it is not just the tragedy of Oedipus that has import for psychoanalysis. The idea of tragedy is more broadly relevant to the core concepts of psychoanalysis. In this course, we will focus on three aspects of the psychoanalytic engagement with and emphasis on tragedy. The concepts of catharsis, fate, and ruin will guide our study. Through close reading and critical analysis of literary, philosophical, and theoretical texts we will take up each of these concepts in order. The overall aim of this course is to introduce students to some of the key concepts of psychoanalysis within the context of the larger philosophical problematic of tragedy.

***This course is run in conjunction with Dr. Antonia Birnbaum’s course “On Not Knowing Greek.” These two seminars can be taken independently, but they are conceived together and have a common Greek bibliography. The combination of both classes is recommended.

The two approaches are related in as they take the double effect of the tragic, both on the philosophy of modernity and on psychoanalysis, as a common field of inquiry. What is at stake is to ask why, and how, the historical distance to antique tragedy becomes essential material of contemporary thought.

The tragedies Oedipus Rex, Oedipus at Colonus, Antigone, Oresty by Aeschylos are the primary tragic texts that we will work through in conjunction with Dr. Birnbaum's class.
