2020W, scientific seminar (SEW), 4.0 ECTS, 2.0 semester hours, course number S03420
Description
Not just since Modernism, Art and Fashion share a close, but complex relationship that concerns their similarities and entanglements, mutual convergences and demarcations on an aesthetic, economic and institutional level. In the seminar we will address these issues with reference to contemporary art and fashion since the 1990s. Proceeding from the analysis of selected examples from the collections of the Museum of Applied Arts and the Collections of Fashions and Costumes at the University of Applied Arts we will investigate the diverse intersections of both spheres situated beyond conventional differenciations of visual and applied art. Therefore, the seminar does not only provide an understanding of particular objects but also an introduction to the analysis and theory of fashion as well as to fundamental theoretical and historical questions on the relation between autonomy and use-value.
Examination Modalities
Mandatory to successfully pass the course are:
regular attendance, active participation (preparations of class readings, kick-off presentations, class discussions), submission of an exhibition review or a paper in the format of a catalogue or dictionary entry
Your reviews/papers should develop a plausible historical or theoretical argument that ideally originates from concise (critical) readings of relevant primary sources and secondary literature. Your papers must feature formally correct footnotes/appendix, demonstrate a high level of analytical accuracy and precise in terminology und be written coherent and cohesive, with proper spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
