Einführung in Theorie und Geschichte des Design I

Björn Franke
Design, Design History and Theory
2020W, Vorlesungen (VO), 2.0 ECTS, 2.0 semester hours, course number S02859

Description

This lecture examines the role of the visual in human communication and in understanding the world. In Visual Culture Studies, visuality is understood not only in the form of images, but as a fundamental visual constitution of thinking and access to the world. Images, in a broader sense, play a central role here, as they increasingly shape the private, public and professional realms: everyday and identity-forming images on social channels, news images of war, attacks and catastrophes, scientific and forensic representations, imaginary images of possible ones or future worlds, as well as images that produce machines for other machines. In this lecture, especially static and moving pictures are problematised, because unlike texts they often do not appear to be constructed, but are understood as a direct reflection of reality. For this purpose, perspectives from the field of visual culture, media and cultural theory, technology philosophy are used.

Learning Objective
The lecture should provide the students with the following contents and competences: Introduction to visual culture, media and cultural theory; extension of critical thinking in dealing with visual aspects of communication, identity formation and understanding of the world; inspiration for design projects and further research
