Raum und Konstruktion

Karin Raith
Architecture, Building Construction
2020W, Vorlesung und Übungen (VU), 2.0 ECTS, 2.0 semester hours, course number S00490

Construction is both an instrument for producing spaces and objects and a means of artistic expression - a sort of language. The course imparts basic knowledge of the syntax and vocabulary of this language and deals with key construction principles applicable to physical objects of various sizes (articles of daily use, furniture, and especially architecture). Which physical and geometrical laws are to be observed? Which structural systems can be applied to which materials? Which structures, spatial effects and surfaces can thereby be created?

These principles /topics are presented and discussed in the weekly lectures, the acquired knowledge is tested and applied on an architectural project of your own. Topic: a space that arouses emotions. A small building with a striking atmosphere of your choice - dramatic or quiet, oppressive or liberating, cheerful, solemn, frightening, funny etc. - is to be designed. First of all, it is necessary to consider which architectural means can be used to create the desired room atmosphere - geometry, construction, material, lighting etc. - then the building is to be developed constructively and presented in floor plan, sections and views. (This last step is also part of the course "Plandarstellung für Industrial Designer /Plan Presentation for Industrial Designers", which is organisationally connected with the course "Raum und Konstruktion/ Space and Construction").

In addition to the lecture, Anja and I offer regular weekly support for the design and construction process via Zoom: every Tuesday 9:00 -11:00 and every Wednesday 14:00 - 16:00.

Examination Modalities

Active participation in the course. Design andconstructive elaboration of a small architectural object, which also serves as a basis for the course "Plandarstellung für Industrial Designer /Plan presentation for industrial designers" (Anja Jonkhans). The conceptual quality of the design and the acquired constructive understanding will be assessed.

The small architectural object which you will design for "Raum und Konstruktion” will serve as a basis for the drawing of plans in the course "Plandarstellung für Industrial Designer". Therefore, we strongly recommend to combine the courses "Raum und Konstruktion" and "Plandarstellung" (Wednesday 11:00 - 12:30,  Anja Jonkhans)
