Beschreibung

Due to Covid-19 all classes will take place in Zoom-Meetings during the scheduled date of this class (dates see below). Thank you for your co-operation. We are together making the best out of this problematic situation!

This semester’s research journey will start with a discussion of the philosophical debate between Spinoza and Descartes, in which they develop conflicting epistemologies of the body: “Are body & mind two substances, or are they just two attributes of one and the same substance?” “What drives a body to persevere itself?” “Is desire indeed the inner essence of a lived-body?” But what, if a lived-body loses the appetite to live and actually starts to negate the fact to be alive? Is such a destructive form of life not highly ambiguous––to live, and, at the same time, desire not to live? Trying, actively, to destroy life? Questions like these will lead us to further readings of texts from Friedrich Nietzsche, Jean-Luc Nancy, Judith Butler and Avital Ronell––, who indeed discovered a death-drive in the middle of our desiring machines. The overall aim of the course intends to introduce an epistemology of bodies, which actually does matter.
