Description

THE FRINGING OF THE ARTS

A discourse on post-dramatic theater and its media

In his essay The Art and the Arts (1967) Theodor W. Adorno diagnoses the blurring of the genre boundaries in contrast to the total work of art. He speaks of a fraying of the arts, the defacing of art and the defusing of the lines of demarcation. Adorno polemicizes against a questionable spiritualization of art towards its sensual appearance.

In general, he sees a breakdown of the genre boundaries from the inside in the fraying phenomenon. It would hardly be possible to provide a clear generic name: “The more a genre lets in what its intrinsic continuum does not contain, the more it participates in its stranger […]. It becomes virtual […] that which we don't know what it is. "

The interdisciplinarity of post-dramatic theater mixes genres, blurs their borders - but do their avant-garde techniques still offer a dramatic context, a political intention or an attitude towards the world? Are you just a quote? Just an effect? Pointless?
