Motivation:

The impact of environmental and ecological parameters becomes increasingly formative in architectural design. To give architects a head start within this discourse, this course aims to develope design strategies that integrate architectural sciences, such as buliding physics and ecological engineering, into the design process.

Energy Design Strategies:

Energy Design is seen as a design strategy, which allows to develope systems to balance the energy consumption and the energy production of buildings. Beyond that, in this course, energy shall not only be discussed as an economic and physical quantity, but in the context of perceptual qualities, e.g. also acoustic qualities. Energy design strategies explores energy-related environmental qualities as an intrinsic part of the architectural experience.

Methodology:

Parametric methodes and software for building performance evaluation are combined to pursue a design research in performance-driven architecture. Controlled and efficient performance may rely on a set of date, measured by sensors.

Topic:

Work and play are words used to describe the same thing under differing conditions.” Mark Twain

In present day architectural discourse, the mouse, the keyboard, hardware and software have become the main tools in the design process. These tools guide us in conscious and unconscious ways, influencing our way of working and thinking, therefore our design. In recent years, technological developments have started to close the gap between digital design and its realization. For example, kinematic systems like robots and 3d printers have become an intrinsic part of materializing digital and parametric ideas in architecture, making the fabrication of these shapes easier. Nevertheless, becoming a constraint, the geometry you input is the geometry you get.
We want to rethink this new paradigm, by developing and creating toolsfor invention and conceptualization, rather than for manufacturing only, giving new possibilities of designing a feedback loop.
First on a small scale, by developing generative drawing, sound or phenomena tools. As we cannot work with you hands-on on building actual kinetic models, the interface of these tools become crucial. This interface should be designed as a virtual consoleand should aim at providing us with information to be used as part of the design itself. Architects always used methods of representation to be able to communicate their ideas. These methods always supported but also limited what could be conceived and realized. The virtual consoleshould be already part of represented spatial reality.
The input of the machine will come from live streamsof weather stations or hourlyclimate files, collecting live environmental data which will be re-interpreted, digested, and will become drivers of spatial elements and (inter-)action. The design of these machines will be the starting point of an information translation between thedifferent layers of virtualityin a loop. This method will allow us to compare and balance the expected with the unexpected.
The new experiences that we will gain by exploring this process will be playfully interactive and expand our imagination. For a final exhibition, different "frozen" conditions of these changing virtual worlds, similar to a stroboscopic image, will be 3D printed.

Prüfungsmodalitäten

Distant learning (Corona-mode):

All meetings are held via zoom.us. The key to the meeting is sent to registered students only via basemail.

For formally and successfully completing the semester task a documentary has to be presented at the end of the semester, as well as some 3d printed stroboscopic modells (photos should be shown in the documentary).

It further is mandatory to be active throughout the semester. Activity is shown by regularily posting to our blog:

// because of the crises, we will be available also during the holidays //

Further specifications follow via mail, during our meetings and on our blog.

Please register online, only.
