Beschreibung

The content of the courses "Introduction to Empirical Research Methods - Statistics 1, Group 1" and "Introduction to Empirical Research Methods - Statistics 1, Group 2" is the same. Due to the number of registrations, a second course was opened. Students, who are currently in the "Basics Phase" of the bachelor programme "Cross-disciplinary-stategies" are recommended to attend Group 1. Students who are in the "Application Phase" of the bachelor programme and students from different study plans are recommend to attend Group 2.

In the course, students will be taught how empirical studies can be understood, discussed and criticised. In addition, students will be introduced to the basics of descriptive and inferential statistics by planning, implementing and evaluating their own empirical study.

As the course extends over two semesters, the winter semester 19/20 focuses on the teaching of basic knowledge about empirical research. In doing so, the course combines theoretical input with practice. Thereby, the students will be supported in developing the framework for their own empirical study, which should be completed by the end of the semester. During the semester break, the students have to collect the data for their study by using their own questionnaires. Furthermore, the students have to do the data entry by using a data processing program. In the summer semester, the students continue to work with the collected data, as the semester will specialise on data evaluation. If students only attend the course during summer semester, they can work with a fictive data set.

To sum up, the topics of the winter semester will be:

- (differences between) quantitative and qualitative research methods

- planning an empirical study

- hypothesis formulation

- operationalization

- selecting a sample

- creating a survey

- scale levels

- data collection

- data entry

The following content is planned for summer semester 20/21:

- Electronically supported data analysis (important statistical characteristics and representation forms, filter setting, classification, recoding of variables, correlation and reliability analysis, indexing, diversity tests, etc.)

- Interpretation of the results

Expected learning outcomes:

Students are familiar with fundamental terms of empirical-quantitative research. They are able to undertake a survey independently and to create a data mask for the acquired data in an electronic data processing program. Furthermore, the students know how to enter the collected data in the data processing program.

Prüfungsmodalitäten

For the successful participation of the course, the following criteria must be fulfilled:

- Regular attendance (at least 80%) - 30% of the grade

- Timely submission of partial services (literature-based research question, hypothesis, operationalization, excerpt, questionnaire) - 40% of the grade

- Data collection and data entry - 30% of the grade
