Art and Digital Reality

2019W, scientific seminar (SEW), 4.0 ECTS, 2.0 semester hours, course number S03001

Description

Processes of digitization have become an ever more pervasive force, intruding in and radically reorganizing various social fields, over the past years. New algorithmic regimes, omnipresent data processing and the increasing powers of machine intelligence have contributed to the creation of a new “network reality,” or more precisely: an interlocked assemblage of various “networked realities.” The realms of cultural and artistic production do not remain untouched by these ongoing developments. Forgoing any quick diagnosis, one has to ask if there isn’t a profound subversion underway – concerning both the ways in which art is embedded in its surrounding social and political realities, as well as the way in which art itself is materially and informationally constituted. The seminar tries to address the most salient aspects concerning this potential subversion. Center stage here are the ways in which today’s art production is confronted by, and is itself – actively and reflexively – confronting this entangled web of digital realities. Guiding questions are: (1) How can art grasp and cope with the “disruptive” qualities of digitization happening on various levels? (2) What are the more profound relations of artistic endeavors to their all-encompassing digital environments? (3) In what ways are the new networked realities susceptible to critical and artistic reflection? (4) Can art create its own, sustainable and globally friendly, digital realities?
