2019W, Vorlesungen (VO), 2.0 ECTS, 2.0 semester hours, course number S02994

Description

Movie posters; the discourses of Haider and Le Pen; a Panzani ad for pasta; Russian folktales; fashion – just a few of the topics we are going to focus on from a (culture) semiotic perspective.
Semiotics = the doctrine/theory of signs and sign processes (semioses). Since it began some 110 years ago, semiotics deals with the analysis of cultural processes and products in societies.
Considering the vast literature and the multitude of approaches, any introduction to sign theory is necessarily incomplete. We will start with the “classics” of semiotics (de Saussure, Peorce, Ch.W. Morris, A.J. Greimas, Rossi-Landi), and deal with the fundamental concepts and models. Then we will examine the theories developed for the semiotics of culture, in particular the texts of the Tartu-Moscow school (from scholars like Lotman, Uspenskij, Torop). Finally, we will dicuss semiotic analyses in selected areas in (everyday) culture and media.
