Kunst der Moderne (Zyklus III)

Institute of Studies in Art and Art Education, Art History
2019W, Vorlesungen (VO), 2.0 ECTS, 2.0 semester hours, course number S02957
Description
This is the third part of the survey course in Art History, focussing on Modern art, i.e. the art of the 19th and early 20th centuries. The lecture starts around 1800 and finishes with a first glance at the international avantgardes of the 1940s and 1950s.
The lecture focuses on European art history in the global context in the sense of an "entangled history", in light of the deep interrelation of Modernism and Colonialism, which was geographically expanded and intensified. The visual arts have reacted with the appropriation of non-Western, making orientalism, exoticism and primitivism important topics.
We will also focus on transmedial approaches, as in the conception of the "Gesamtkunstwerk" in late 19th century art, and on the importance of design for Modern art. Additionally, we will look at the impact of the development of photography and film on traditional art practices (painting, sculpture and graphic arts).
Examination Modalities
There will be a written exam at the end of the term, which can be taken in German or English.
There will be two more exam dates. After that no later exam dates will be held, as the lecture focusses on different questions each year.
