Skulptur Körper Performance

Eva Kernbauer
Art Sciences and Art Education, Art History
2019W, scientific seminar (SEW), 2.0 semester hours, course number S02955

Description

In the seminar, we pursue performative aspects in sculpture that express themselves in contemporary art in strong spatial and physical relationality, in appropriations of fashion, design and architecture, and in "body sculptures".

Perhaps this is another variant of a traditonal topos in sculpture: the desire to overcome its inanimate, immobile materiality through vivification. This desire is expressed, for example, in the eroticisation of sculpture in Baroque, Romanticism and Classicism, in its fetishization in Primitivism, in its phenomenological transformation in Existentialism and Minimal Art.

The question of how and under what circumstances a sculpture can be experienced as a (alien) body challenges classical concepts of human physicality: What is a body, if an inanimate, shapeless, even abstract thing can evoke the presence of a physical counterpart? This raises the question as to whether contemporary "performative" sculpture tends to stage posthumanist concepts of physicality, opening up new relationships between humans and objects, vivification and reification.

We will approach these questions via discussions of artworks and seminal texts, as well as exhibition visits.
