Description

LEARNING BY DESIGN, Dr. phil. Martina Grünewald, BBA, MA

From climbing a ladder to prototyping a bag, from car repair work to walks in a park: everyday life is characterized by countless instances of „learning by design“. This seminar explores how material culture has been seen to shape, and be shaped by, shared processes of learning as it engages the development of individual cognitive and physical abilities in the reproduction of social normativity. Through critical reading, written reflection and discussion of select texts from various literary genres (i.e. scholarly essay, textbook, social study, historical analysis, ethnography, expert interview, news report) we review important historical and contemporary discourses that consider design as integral to learning, and learning as integral to design, whether their intimate relationship be framed as social change, artistic expression, embodied knowledge, human development or corporate innovation, and enacted as a Montessori classroom, a Bauhaus basic course, an online game or a baroque Viennese garden. Through analytical immersion in the research methodologies and interpretive models, students acquire and sharpen informed conceptual approaches to their individual creative practices.
