SEIZING THE OCEANS

Even if the maritime domain covers the largest part of the earth´s surface, for a long time in the history of human settlements these vast water bodies appeared to be unearthly and bewildering. With the exception of the seafaring people and adventurous individuals, the seas were only experienced at its fringes. Since the rise of the modern sciences, various disciplines engage in exploring the very nature of the oceans and their respective role in other subjects of study, and their particular  interest in the deep and high seas.

Besides the obvious (naval architectures; off-shore rigs, wind parks, and hydrologic energy plants), globe spanning invisible infrastructures—unlike on land—seemingly miss any concrete physical or material reference to be aligned to. These inscriptions however, strongly relate to very concrete conditions, which often refer to complicated measures of a dynamic spatial situation.

In lectures and discussion, we investigate the ocean space in various spatial and temporal scales, and it´s mutual dependencies with our living environments, exemplified by selected samples.  By means of individual visual/textual narrations, we will explore all sorts of possible and—maybe impossible—relations between space, time and place, demonstrated by actual situations the world oceans currently produce. 

Contribution to the discussion, and visual/textual investigation of a given topic with negotiable focus, related to individual interest and the subject of the course.

Priority is given to CDS students. Students from other faculties or universities will be given a place on subject to room capacities.
