Partizipative Kunst. Entwicklung und Theoretisierung

Eva Kernbauer
Art Sciences and Art Education, Art History
2019S, Seminar (SE), 2.0 semester hours, course number S02617

Description

Working with the analysis of artworks and seminal texts on participation, we will look at the development and theory of participatory practices in contemporary art. We will focus on art's engagement with social and political categories. The seminar will deal with basic questions of art history and theory such as the change from art reception to participation, the ensuing transformation of artistic authorship, and the inclusion of the art public (as an aesthetic and social entity alike) in artworks. The derivation of the concept of participation from political theory is pursued as well as its current criticism, which usually refers to the limited agency given to audiences, to their commodification in museum structures, or to the comprehensive socio-political claims made on art via the principle of participation. Finally, we will also discuss the future of participation in the age of social media.
