Performing the city

Performing under the conditions of a performative society depending on consumption and media. The blocked intensive workshop deals with artistic strategies in theory and practice. Personal approaches of artistic –performative practice will be integrated and developed and put in relation to collective approaches.

Praterstern as a hot spot of a negotiation focusing on interests of public space versus semi public / privatised space

The location of Praterstern and ist surroundings recently are a hot spot of intense public debates in the city. The topics range from questions of public order, restrictions towards the consumption of drugs and different forms of usage oft he premises. Looking closer it´s also very much about the interests of public space and private business within once public and more and more commercialised spaces.

There will be a focus on the close relations of malls and public transportation where urban transport and consumption leads to the exclusion of financially weaker parts of the population.

The just neighbouring so called „Kaiserwiese“ becomes an example of contradictory behaviour: How do a privately operated beer tent on public ground and a public ban on drinking and „hanging around“ go along? How do sites of encounters of people belonging to a variety of subcultures function under the conditions oft he permanent presence of security services and private houserules? What forms of artistic actions aiming for encounters with the city and it´s citizens do make sense in this urban area? What types of subcultures develop on site and how does ist dynamics influence possible approaches of action?

On the base of observations on site and specific research we develop formats of individual performance positions with asopects of collective performative takes on grounds of elaborated scores. Goal will be the realisation of performative interventions and related reflections.

Body: A trainingstructure will facilitate open encounters with one´s own and other bodies. Instructions and exercises with a background of contemporary dance and performance practice, somatic bodywork with apsects of Tai Ji, Yoga and Contact Improvisation will raise one´s consciousness of the body and trigger impulses for personal research and the development of bodybased performance stratgies. A consciousness of possible constructions of performative presence will occur.
