Description

The lecture course investigates a selection of key episodes of the history of Western architecture that influenced architectural production until today. The most important innovation steps in their development are presented. The topics range from the "first house" via the consequences of the Copernican Revolution to the digital age.

Lecture course in English. No application required -- just come to the lecture hall.

Examination Modalities

Oral exam. Required: reading of an individually chosen text from the course examples at the university library (or of an individually researched text about one of the course's topics) plus its short presentation in the oral exam plus image indentification and contextualization of c. 5 image examples from the lecture course. All images from the course are available for viewing (not for download) on www.architekturgeschichte.at -- pass word will be conveyed to participants in the lecture course. Application for the oral exam from one week before exam date on list at MB office. There are three exam dates in each semester, exams about lecture courses from the past three semesters can be taken at each date.

Architecture and the industrial revolution(s) – from the steam engine to the digital age

The lecture course examines the impact of the technological evolution on architecture and the reactions in the built environment worldwide and in Europe. Some of the examples covered: industrial cities, factory-made houses, engineering, skyscrapers, industrial dogmatism, glass buildings, garden cities, lebensreform, production-line housing, air conditioned shopping malls, synthetics & membranes, structuralism, green building, adaptive energy design, digital and modular production, life-cycle and urban mining.
