Renée Schroeder and Tanja Gesell give an introduction and overview into biology. The main focus is on molecular biology. Starting with questions such as what is life? and how did life emerge?, students will understand fundamental and basic principles about the molecules of life. From there we will discuss current gene technology strategies explaining fundamental experimental and computational approaches. Finally, visualizations both from an artistic point of view as well as from an engineering viewpoint will be discussed with respect to current and fascinating challenges in molecular biology.

The grade will depend the contributions to the discussions and exercises during the semester (60%) and the result of the written exam (40%). Attendance at the lecture is not mandatory but recommended.

Students from other faculties or universities will be given a place on the course subject to room capacities.
