Description

Design & Diversity (Women, Design and Society in Interwar Vienna)

This proseminar addresses the question how women professionals reformulated design language in the process of positioning themselves in the avant-garde scene and as cultural producers in the Viennese society in the Interwar period. It further considers how they promoted through new design empowerment for women and for weak members in society such as ethnic minorities, workers and children. Considering the socialist and conservative political views of women's roles in society, we explore the contributions of women designers, architects, clients, and art critics to Viennese culture. It examines their choices of design practices and further iconography and materials applied in their works and their engagements in the public discourse. Questions addressed are: What new possibilities did they create and what cultural frontiers in Viennese society did they cross in this period. It further analyzes the collaborations between women and men professionals to challenge traditional paternalistic perspectives, customs, and practices in mass media, exhibitions and professional networks. Theoretical texts include gender theories, design and sociology, art and psychology and the role of visual culture in shaping public discourse. This proseminar provides architecture, industrial design, graphic design, and fashion students as well as cultural, architectural, and design history students with novel and applied strategies relevant to the practice of their profession.
