Urban Strategies and Theory of the Landscape
Architecture, Urban Strategies
2018W, Seminar (SE), 2.0 semester hours, course number S02600
ONCE UP ON A TIME...
Every spatial manipulation of a given environment triggers changes of an existing, complex system of mutual dependencies. As the natural and cultural environment is constituted by manifold reciprocal relationships between material and immaterial conditions, the particular temporal, geographical and socio-political situation make up the specific framework for adopting change. By means of selected examples, common paradigms of urban and spatial organizational principles are critically reflected in order to reassess their relevance in regard to actual political and societal dynamics.
In an ever more accelerating world—although intrinsically tied together—the organization of time seemingly prioritizes the relevance of organizing space. Through the lens of architecture related spatial disciplines, exemplified by seminal texts, we look at the spatiality of time, and in turn the temporality of space, paying special attention to seemingly contradictory scales of observation. By means of individual narrations, we will explore all sorts of possible and—maybe impossible— relations between space, time and place, demonstrated by actual situations the world currently produces.
Oral Exam / Presentation / Graphic/written investigation of a given topic with negotiable focus, related to the subject of the course.
The course gives priority to students of architecture who did not yet participate in the wintersemester course. Ranking is made by order of registration and semester-level; Others are very welcome as long as there are places (max 15 participants). The presence at the first meeting (Oct. 9th) is mandatory for partcipation. Regular classes are principally scheduled Tuesdays 12:30-14:00, and as much as possible adjusted in accordance to the IOA studio schedules.
