Description

Wood is not like other working materials, as its origins lie in living organisms. Its structure and its chemical and physical properties are therefore linked to its original function as a plant tissue serving purposes such as transport, mechanical support, and storage.

The lecture's first section deals with the genesis and composition of woods, in order to help understand the "original" purpose of wood within the plant's living body.

In the second section, the resulting properties of wood as a working material in terms of chemical, physical, and biological properties, will be discussed.
