Kunst der Moderne 1800-1950 (Zyklus III)

Art Sciences and Art Education, Art History
2018W, Vorlesungen (VO), 2.0 semester hours, course number S00690

Description

This is the third part of the survey course in Art History, focussing on Modern art, i.e. the art of the 19th and early 20th centuries. The lecture starts around 1800 and finishes with a first glance at the international avantgardes of the 1940s and 1950s.

The lecture focuses on European art history in the global context, in light of the deep interrelation of Modernism and Colonialism, which was geographically expanded and intensified. The visual arts have reacted with the appropriation of non-Western, making orientalism, exoticism and primitivism important topics.

This year, the lecture will focus on the "body images and body poltics". We will also focus on transmedial approaches, as in the conception of the "Gesamtkunstwerk" in late 19th century art, and on the importance of design for Modern art. Additionally, we will look at the impact of the development of photography and film on traditional art practices (painting, sculpture and graphic arts).

Examination Modalities

There will be a written exam at the end of the term, which can be taken in German or English.

There will be two more exam dates at the beginning and at the middle of the following term, respectively. After that no later exam dates will be held, as the lecture focusses on different questions each year.

Registration for the exam is not necessary.

Comments

The lecture will be held in German. Regular attendance is advised.

The lecture will be accompanied by a tutorial course led by Ramona Hirt (ramona.hirt@uni-ak.ac.at).

A handout with detailed information on the lecture programme, the tutorial programme, recommended literature, and so forth is published on www.angewandtekunstgeschichte.net. All important literature is collected for your free perusal in the library in a special "Handapparat".

The image presentations shown in the lecture, as well as helpful texts on each session's topics, are all collected, week for week, in a special OwnCloud-folder. As soon as you are registered for the lecture ("Anmeldung" within Base Angewandte), access to this folder will automatically be provided.
