Self Organization (revisited)
How to characterize the nature of the living? A multiplicities of theories have been proposed. Among practicing scientists, the dominant paradigm remains that of physicochemical reductionism; however, various other reductionist strategies, and theories arising from thermodynamics, cybernetics, system theory, and communication and information theory remain popular. A range of mathematical modeling developed that include the use of computers to examine the collective behavior of many elements. How do complex functional structures of the living emerge? Where are the origins of order? Which models and metaphors help us to understand what life is? The Seminar will explore the notion of the term self organization and it's implications for our understanding of life in a so-called post-genomic age.
