Territories of Art after the Anthropocene
How can we understand the increasingly important idea of a geographical conception of a world of migration and exploitation of resources in relationship to site specificity and public space? How can art work in between concrete locations and social media? How can geographical concepts be understood aesthetically and politically? In this block seminar, we will read and discuss, present to each other, go on excursions, meet people and places. The seminar concludes with a written paper.
What is at stake?
In the recent decades of global networking, specificity, whether spatial, historical, or cultural, has become a scarce resource. Or has it not? Art today claims an extended concept of site specificity, which includes not only solid terrain but also conceptual relatedness, allowing art to interact with these developments. The concept of "public space" has been affected by these changes, it can no longer be understood as merely encompassing concrete or urban space. We approach these themes with the basic idea of temporally and locally interlocking encounters with places and areas, real and imagined, and will discuss newly defined demands on authenticity.
The seminar inculdes discussions, excursions, presentations from students and will be finished with a written text.
