Transkulturelle Spielräume der Moderne II

Eva Kernbauer
Art Sciences and Art Education, Art History
2018S, Seminar (SE), 2.0 semester hours, course number S02222

Description

The seminar focusses on the great importance of non-Western art and culture on the development of Eurepean Modern art (1800-1950). During the winter term, we have investigated the appropriation of non-Western cultures and modes of artistic expression by Western artists, which has taken on different forms over the course of Modern art history: orientalism, exoticism and primitivism are manifest in different periods and art forms (from romanticism, symbolism and expressionism to surrealism and dada).

The summer term will focus on contemporary artworks engaging with the highly problematic European cultural heritage that is so deeply connected to colonialism. We will also learn about Modernism in its global expansion, especially in Africa and South America.

We will discuss artworks and texts in order to explore the question of the "entanglement" of European and non-European art. The seminar's goal is a critical assessment of concepts of transculturalism.

This course includes an excursion to Brussels and Berlin in spring/summer 2018 (with Eva Maria Stadler/Kunst und Wissenstransfer). Students attending the seminar are eligible for participation.

Examination Modalities

Regular attendance, active participation, an oral presentation and a written paper are expected and necessary for a successful completion of the course.
