Druckgrafik als Medium künstlerischer, politischer und religiöser Debatten

Johanna Schwanberg
Art Sciences and Art Education, Art History
2018S, Seminar (SE), 2.0 semester hours, course number S01937

Description

The seminar sheds light on the history of printed graphic work in manifold ways—from fifteenth-century one-sheet woodcuts and the invention of copperplate engraving, etching, and lithography to the more recent techniques of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries such as silk-screen printing, Xerox art, and computer graphics.

Special emphasis is put on the genre’s culture- and media-historical significance: for centuries, artists have relied on printing to disseminate their political, religious, artistic, and ideological views on a wider scale.

The seminar also explores the relationship between image and language, as the two cultural techniques of writing and drawing have come to be closely linked particularly within this medium.

Excursions to museums and depots or workshops constitute an essential component of the seminar. These excursions will be mainly concerned with detailed work analyses and the consideration of the different attitudes toward printing taken by artists, collectors, printers, and restorers.

Examination Modalities

Participation in the preliminary presentation is mandatory. Prerequisites for a successful attendance of the seminar are regular participation (students are not allowed to miss more than the equivalent of half a block unit), active cooperation, a talk, and a written final paper.
