Description

Radical Design

with Leah Armstrong

What is ‘radical design’? Is it design for human need rather than commercial profit? The Italian avant-garde? The fashioning of a radical body? Is it ‘smart’ materials or the utopian concept of the ‘singularity’? Informed by contemporary and historical writing on the politics of design, this course will explore the relationship between radical ideas and the politics of material culture, focusing on case study examples in the twentieth and twenty-first century to address the question of what makes design radical. The course is structured around critical discussions of key texts, films and objects through student-led seminar presentations and ends with a critical essay on what it means to be radical in contemporary design, from a material culture perspective.
