Transkulturelle Spielräume der Moderne

Eva Kernbauer
Art Sciences and Art Education, Art History
2017W, Seminar (SE), 2.0 semester hours, course number S01938

Description

  1. The seminar focusses on the great importance of non-Western art and culture on the development of Eurepean Modern art (1800-1950). We will investigate the appropriation of non-Western cultures and modes of artistic expression by Western artists, which has taken on different forms over the course of Modern art history: orientalism, exoticism and primitivism are manifest in different periods and art forms (from romanticism, symbolism and expressionism to surrealism and dada). In this course, we will discuss artworks and texts in order to explore the question of the "entanglement" of European and non-European art.

The seminar is connected to the lecture Zyklus III, with its special focus on transculturalism and Western appropriations of non-Western art. Attendance of the lecture (or an earlier attendance of Eva Kernbauer's Zyklus III course) is mandatory for attendance of the seminar.

This courses will be followed by an excursion to Belgium in spring/summer 2018 (with Eva Maria Stadler/Kunst und Wissenstransfer). Students attending this course are eligible for participation.

Examination Modalities

Regular attendance, active participation, an oral presentation and a written paper are expected and necessary for a successful completion of the course.
