Description

Out of Hand: Materializing the Postdigital introduces students to selected approaches and methods used in computer-aided fabrication in the fine arts and design, such as CNC (computer numerical control) machining, digital knitting (OpenKnit), 3-D printing and additive manufacturing (the industrial version of 3-D printing). With the arrival of early additive manufacturing equipment in the 1980s and the possibility of processing digital data into three-dimensional objects, new forms of artistic expression and design approaches evolved. Artist and designers were fascinated by a number of technological innovations in the field of digital fabrication, which led them to rethink their creative processes and tools. The lectures offers an overview from the past two decades of some of the most compelling approaches of materializing the postdigital, when computers took over the control of the creation of objects – transforming the human creative process in novel und unpredicted ways.

BASE Angewandte is an important source of information for the lecture. Useful resources such as a subject guide and digital documents for further readings will be available there. Check also the website medientheorie.ac.at regularly for subject announcements and updates.

Examination Modalities

You have to attend the lecture each week, unless you have a very good reason for your absence (e.g. illness or other difficulties). To participate effectively in class required readings are expected. Each student is also required to a written research essay about a topic (12-15 pages) or an oral test at the end of the lecture series about a given topic or about your own topic (after discussing the topic with the lecturer).
