This seminar course explores the meaning and value of materials in contemporary design culture, informed by new works in anthropology and design history and theory. As design moves increasingly toward the immaterial and the digital, the course responds to recent critical thinkers and makers who argue that the material has become more, not less, important. The course literature engages with these thinkers and makers to consider the implications of the politics, properties and ecologies that shape the material today.

One 2,000 word essay on an aspect of material culture addressed in the course.
