The course will explore the art of sculpture from different perspectives. On the one hand, it will offer a survey of the history of sculpture and plastic art, focusing on the stylistic developments in the various epochs. Different techniques, materials, artistic tasks, and subjects will be taken into account and analyzed by drawing on selected examples. In relating to theoretical discussions and theories of sculpture, the special character of sculpture in contrast to painting and graphic art will be dealt with, on the other, as will works crossing the dividing lines between sculpture and other genres (architecture, painting, photography, performance). In addition to work in the seminar room, the course will be particularly concerned with providing opportunities for the students’ spatial experience of sculpture and the translation of things seen into words, as well as with meeting up with both female and male Austrian sculptors.

Participants must have attended a proseminar in art history or another humanities discipline. They will qualify by presenting a paper and developing the subject in writing, as well as through their active involvement in discussions; no more than two absences allowed.
