Description

 Early photography is closely tied to the term “applied”. It was used, for example, in the sciences to expand the limits of human vision, providing spectacular new images of the world from the very beginning.

In this class, we trace the path of the development of recording technologies to examine the emergence of photographic images: From the early days in science to the fields of journalism, fashion, and advertising.

Using selected examples such as Josef Maria Eder, Eadward Muybridge, Ernst Ludwig Mach, Madame d ́Ora, Edward Steichen, the students of the Design Laboratory at the New School for Social Research headed by Alexey Brodovitch, including Richard Avedon, Irving Penn, and Lillian Bassman, the work methods of various photographers are explored and the theories of the different eras discussed. The student’s own critical viewpoint should be sharpened through independent research of more recent approaches to photography.

This class aims to provide a fundamental knowledge of photographic technologies, to connect the dots of the history of image production, and to explore photography as a constructive cultural resource.
